Presidential Musings

Presidential Musings – September 2018

Hello Canberra Blues Society (CBS) members! My name is Dave McRae and I’ve
taken over the reins of Presidency from the very capable Dean Edgecombe, who is
overseas for some fun for 12 or so months.
I have been playing drums around Canberra for more years than I would like to think.
I’ve played in quite a few different bands over the years, including being drummer for
a girls calisthenics team competition. Oh, the memories…
The CBS AGM was held on Wednesday 29th August at the Harmonie German Club and the committee for the next year elected. I’d like
to thank Dean Edgecombe and John Van Buuren for all the work they did over the last 12 months to help make the CBS as successful
as it has been.
The new CBS committee is:
Dave McRae – President, Kerry Scarlett – Secretary, Dan Collins – Treasurer, Chris Harland – Membership Officer,
Ross Buchanan – Media Officer, Adam Briscoe – IT Wrangler, John Spencer – Jam Co-ordinator, Steve Hartnett – Events
Our biggest event of the year, International Blues Music Day, was a fantastic day with lots of great feedback from the artists and
attendees. A lot of work goes into running this event, so a huge THANK YOU to our dedicated committee for organising & all the
volunteers who helped on the day.
The August Youth Blues Jam hosted by the Narrabundah College Bundah Blues Band & Muddy Wolfe was a success yet again. Great
to see so much up and coming talent in the Canberra area, or even just down the road! And the rest of the day consisted of a lot of new
talent as well. Another great afternoon at the CBS monthly jam.
Our September Jam Workshop was well attended – the next one is on Wednesday 3
rd October. This is a great chance for all those budding blues musicians out there to hone their skills before getting up at the jam in the big hall with all those people watching! The
workshop is conducted by some of the finest musicians in the area and is an excellent way to learn more about playing blues and playing with other musicians.
Looking ahead we have Robert Susz & The Continental Blues Party playing at the HGC on Friday 14th September. Continental Robert
rose to fame as the front man or the Dynamic Hepnotics in the 80’s with songs like “Soul kind of feeling” and is now touring with the
Continental Blues Party playing some great soul, blues and funk. A show not to be missed!
On Sunday 16th September we have the CBS monthly Jam hosted by Ali Penny & the Money Makers. Come on down and see Ali and
the boys play sweet but sassy blues. They’ll then be followed up by some of Canberra’s best musos, jamming their respective socks off!
Whoa! What a week that is!
A special mention for an event coming up at the Austrian Club on Saturday 22nd September; Australia’s virtuoso of acoustic roots and
blues, the wonderful Nick Charles (Melbourne) will be performing solo. Show starts at 7.30pm with discounted tickets for CBS members
$15. Check our gig guide for all blues events.
Coming up in October we have Oktoberfest and once again we are looking for volunteers to help out at the Harmonie German Club’s
Knuckles stand. Oktoberfest is on 26-28th October at the Queanbeyan showgrounds. If you could spare some time for this, it would be
greatly appreciated!
Hope to see you at a jam or event soon.

Dave
