Presidential Musings

Presidential Musings – July 2018

Welcome fellow blues lovers. It turns out my last month’s Presidential Musing was just a little premature. I did have one more before we head off to the UK on 10 July.

Last month’s jam was hosted by the wonderful Black Hat Band. Keith Joliffe did a superb job filling in on bass for Peter Barta who was unwell.  Again we had a fabulous line up of jammers with a few new faces and a visit from Phil O’Connor who hasn’t played in the ‘Berra for close on 42 years. I thoroughly enjoyed jamming with him & hope it’s not too long before we see him back again.

This month’s jam will be hosted by Leaving Reality, a young band from Goulburn who impressed us enough at the Youth Jam in August last year to earn their own spot on the jam calendar. These guys undoubtedly have a big future ahead of them and really deserve our support.

There are a number of other great gigs this month including blues legends Ben Harper and Charlie Musselwhite at the Canberra Theatre on Thursday 19th. This is one gig that should not be missed. Canberra Blues Society is presenting the Mason Rack Band on Friday 6th and the Harmonie German Club has the mighty Bondi Cigars on Friday 20th, two great bands.  South Coast singer-songwriter Jack Biilman is launching his new CD “The Hills Have Eyes” at the Abbey on Saturday 21st. Jack has kindly offered CBS members ½ price at the door.  Local bands Key Grip are on at the Press Club on Thursday 12th and the Black Hat Band are at Hippo Co on Monday 16th.  We are spoiled for choice in our town, no doubt about it. Make sure you check out our gig guide for all upcoming events.

Our July workshop Jam was held in the Keller Bar on Wednesday 4 July and once again it was a record attendance with heaps of positive feedback. These jams are for aspiring blues players and singers who don’t quite feel confident to get up at the main jam but would like to play in an ensemble situation in a supportive atmosphere with a host band providing guidance and mentoring. The next workshop Jam will be held on Wednesday 1 August, so pencil that date in your diaries.

International Blues Music Day is only a month away and the CBS is going bigger and better than ever this year with our very own mini-blues fest.  Twelve acts will be performing on the day on two stages. The line up features some great local acts along with bands and artists from South Coast NSW, Sydney, Melbourne, Queensland and Canada.  We also feature a Hot Rod display, market stalls, raffle prizes & CBS members’ lucky door prize. I encourage you all to spread the word, invite your family & friends & help us make this a resounding success for your Society.

Thank you to all those who renewed their memberships by 30 June and entered the members draw. Steven Stroud has won a CBS T’shirt plus a ticket to our 2018 International Blues Music Day.

Remember, this will be your last Blues News if you don’t renew your membership by the end of this month. See attached renewal form.

Bye for now and hope you are all staying warm with good wine and sweet blues music.

Deano
