Presidential Musing – November 2019

Hello and welcome to another musings for the Canberra Blues Society!

The CBS AGM was held on Wednesday 30th November at the Harmonie German Club and the committee for the next year elected. I’d like to thank Kerry Scarlett, Dan Collins, Ross Buchanan, John Spencer and Chris Harland for their contributions to the CBS over the last 12 or so months.

Although not on the committee, I’d also like to thank Kerry Sattler (K2) for all the hard work she’s done for us over the last year and previously. The CBS dynamo!

The new CBS committee is:

Dave McRae – President, Mark Farrell – Secretary, Adam Briscoe – Treasurer. The committee also has Steve Hartnett – Musicians Representative, Dean Edgecombe – Membership officer, Gavin Kelly and Doug Park on board.

Along with a new committee, we will be introducing a couple of changes to the way some things are currently done. Firstly, the entry fee to the monthly jams is having a price rise after many years! The new admission fees from February 2020 will be $5 for members and $10 for non-members. Still pretty cheap for 3 hours of entertainment with some of the region’s best musicians!

To share the load of putting on these great jams, we’re also looking at having a roster of volunteers for the jams and the jam workshop to help with things like setup and pack up of the stage and front desk, manning the door and possibly, raffle sales. I’ll let you know more when details are finalised.

Also, the Jam Workshops, while well attended are running at a loss, which is unsustainable. The committee has decided to raise the entrance fees to $10 CBS members & $15 Non-members starting February 2020. A lot of work goes into running these workshops & the knowledge being gained by the participants is invaluable.

We have listened to your feedback and we’re also looking at changing the way the jams themselves are managed. A new clock will be on stage so the performers can see how much time they have left. It’s still a couple of jams away from being ready so I’ll let you know more in a coming musing.

So, exciting times ahead!

Oktoberfest this year went off with a bang! And a lot of wind! It was blowing a gale out there, but that didn’t deter the punters from enjoying the music, beer and of course, the knuckles. My thanks to all the volunteers who worked over the weekend to make it a huge success and a lot of fun.

It’s the end of an era. Sadly Thursday night Blues at the National Press Club comes to an end this Thursday 7 November. But they’re going out with a bang! With Steve ‘West’ Weston (UK) backed by Tomcat Playground & Chris Harland Blues Duo opening, it promises to be a night to remember! Free for members & guests.

Canberra Blues Society is once again sponsoring the Blues Award (valued at $300) at the Australian National Busking Championships being held in Cooma on Saturday 16 November. Nominations close on 8 November.

STOP PRESS! Just announced Blues Roulette with Frank Sultana (Syd), Sammy Owen (Melb), Ross Ward (Syd), Kate Madden (Melb), Ben Wicks (Melb) & our very own drumming legend Mitch Preston with be playing at the Harmonie German Club on Fri 6 December – FREE ENTRY
