Presidential Musing December 2020

What a year and so far we are easing out of the crisis.

The ACT government has further eased occupancy restrictions but, as of my writing this, we are still not allowed to dance.  If we don’t get careless we should be able to dance soon.

Blues is unstoppable. STOP PRESS Dancing is now allowed at your table!

I was very impressed by Julian James (ably backed by Mitch Preston and Moondog) in the Keller recently (hope he comes back in 2021) and The Johnny Reynolds Band at the last jam.

I haven’t been to any other gigs this month because I have been rehearsing and recording with the Bluetones Duo and rehearsing the Bluetone Specials full band for the 11th December at the Austrian Club. This was to be our first outing since we missed out on hosting the Blues Jam in April so we were very eager. Unfortunately this show was cancelled by the Austrian Club, so our apologies to anyone who had intended coming along.

The new CBS committee is settling in and starting to meet regularly. Good work comrades.

Sad to hear of the death of our past Secretary, Mark Farrell. Our sincere condolences to Mark’s family.

Congratulations to Brent Johnson on winning the cigar box guitar donated by STGuitars.

Voting for the National Busking Championships has opened. There’s a $300 prize for the best Blues Act.

I’m looking forward to the Christmas Blues Jam with Bonnie Kay & the Bonafides and I’m honoured that the Bluetone Specials duo is the opening act for Bucky’s Big Bash on 9 January.  With nine acts including PJ O’Brien Band from Sydney over nine hours; this will be a fantastic day of live music raising funds for Rise Above Capital Region Cancer Relief

If you are staying in town for the holiday season, check our online gig guide for local gigs in January.

We have just booked a couple of great shows –

Fiona Boyes – The Keller Sessions on Saturday 30 Jan 2021.

Blues Roulette feat. Jimi Hocking & Frank Sultana on Thursday 4 February 2021. Tickets to both shows will be on-sale very soon.

And even though COVID put a stop to the Australian Blues Music Festival in February next year, the Goulburn Club plan to run a day of Blues and have asked CBS to run the Blues Jam on Saturday night 13 February 2021. So pencil that one in your diaries. (more info in January’s Blues News). Sadly this has now been cancelled due to NSW COVID restrictions being changed.

On behalf of myself and the CBS Committee I wish to thank you all for your support of CBS during 2020 and wish you a happy and safe Festive Season.
