Presidential Musing – August 2019

Howdy doody Blues fans!

What a month July was. I had a lurgy for a good part of it and I probably wasn’t the only one! Got to go to a couple of Apollo 11 50th anniversary functions, which, for a geeky boy were great! I did manage to get along to one of Bucky’s jams at the Austrian Club, hosted by Muddy Wolfe. That was a great night. If you haven’t seen Muddy Wolfe, get yourself along to one of their gigs. You’ll be glad you did!

Thanks to The Drivers for hosting our July Blues Jam. You did a great job. And International Blues Music Day (IBMD) is done and dusted and what a success it was! Lots of people there with smiles from ear to ear! And the acts were outstanding. My pick for the day was Electric Tommy Johnston. Very enjoyable! All together a great day was had by all.

I’d like to thank the Canberra Blues Society committee for organising the event. In particular I’d like to thank Kerry Sattler (K2) and Kerry Scarlett (K1) for all their efforts in the organisation of the IBMD. I’d also like say a big thank you to all our volunteers without whom the day would not have run anywhere nearly as smoothly. And finally, to all who attended, thanks for making it a successful IBMD!

August is the Youth in Blues Jam. This will be hosted by the Bundah Blues Band. These are the guys and gals from Narrabundah College. Music teacher at the College, John Black organises a group of his students to host the jam each August and it’s always great to see some young talent grace the HGC stage. Co-hosts, Small Town Afro from Goulburn will be doing a closing ½ hour set. Come along and support these young musicians hosting a fine blues afternoon! It’s on this Sunday 18 August at 1pm till approximately 4.30pm.

CBS has switched its online ticketing platform to Humanitix. This is the first not-for-profit ticketing platform which directs 100% of profits from booking fees to education projects that help disadvantaged children. We reckon that’s a great incentive worth supporting.

Our AGM has been postponed (date to be advised), as we still have positions that need filling, and we’re hoping you’re the person to do it! The Society can only continue if we have a working committee, so please have a think about taking a more active role in the CBS. We have positions in media, bookkeeping, website mgmt and other roles. You will need to be a current financial member of the CBS to nominate. Please send an email to contact@canberrabluessociety.com.au or call me on 0407 255 848 or the Secretary, Kerry Scarlett on 0414 292 150.

Musicians – Don’t forget our September Jam Workshop on Wednesday, 4 September in the Keller Bar at the Harmonie German Club. 7pm – 10pm. CBS members have been offered a discount on weekend tickets to the Red, White, Amber & Blues Festival being held at the George Harcourt Inn on the weekend of 25 – 27 October. (See page 9 for details)

Urgent call-out for Oktoberfest volunteers. As most of you know, CBS runs the Knuckles stand at the Harmonie German Clubs Oktoberfest event at the Queanbeyan Showgrounds. The Red, White, Amber & Blues Festival is on the same weekend 25 – 27 October, so we need a commitment from volunteers if we are to run the stand this year, or give up this important fundraiser to another community group. Please contact Kerry Scarlett on 0414 292 150 if you can do a shift or two over the weekend. (See page 11 for details)

That’s all folks – ‘til next month
