Presidential Musings

Presidential Musings- August 2018

Welcome fellow blues lovers. Well our illustrious president has settled into life in England and has sent us this little message “First Blues Jam last Thursday was a blast. Not as many players as CBS but
everyone who got up could play. My bass still needed a little work so I only sang. Ended up doing four songs and had a great time hanging out with the local musicians. The pub The Golden Lion also has
jazz and roots music a few nights a week. Our new flat is only a 15 minute walk away so I can see it becoming my new local”.
This month is our annual Youth Jam and will be hosted by Bundah Blues Band. Once again, John Black has put together a great bunch
of kids from Narrabundah College to show us their skills. Closing off our Jam is a new local band Muddy Wolfe.
For those who saw Ben Harper and Charlie Musselwhite at the Canberra Theatre on Thursday 19th; you experienced a brilliant
performance. Charlie’s harp playing was faultless & Ben Harper gave his all. It was truly a magical night.
Our International Blues Music Day was a resounding success with heaps of positive feedbacks from artists and punters. A big THANK
YOU to all the volunteers, artists, Harmonie German Club & other sponsors, Canberra Hot Rod Association & market stall operators. We
couldn’t have done it without you. Congratulations to Greg Simmons who was super excited to win the CBS members prize draw of a
double pass to the Blues Train down in Queenscliff VIC. A number of us have made the trip down for the Blues Train music experience
in the past and we can highly recommend it. Makes a great birthday present! (See page 8)
More about International Blues Music Day in next month’s Blues News.

Another couple of dates to put in your diaries for October are the Wally Bamford memorial concert on Saturday 27th at the Bushranger
Hotel Collector. Kicks off at 2pm and goes right through to 11.30pm. All proceeds raised go to the Centenary Institute that is trying to
find a cure for SADS (Sudden Adult Death Syndrome). Canberra Blues Society is a proud sponsor of this event. Also the Gundaroo
Music Festival is being held on Saturday 13th from 10am. Festival favourites 19Twenty hit the stage at 6pm. Proceeds go to MND NSW
to assist those dealing with MND (Motor Neurone Disease).
Our August Workshop Jam was held in the Keller Bar on Wednesday 1
st August. Rick Bamford has kindly stepped in to co-ordinate the jams while Deano’s away & he’s doing a mighty fine job. The next workshop Jam will be held on
Wednesday 5 th Sept, so pencil that date   in your diaries.
Canberra Blues Society AGM will be held on Wednesday 29th August 7pm in the Keller at the Harmonie German Club.
After a few hiccups we are able to announce our new website is up and running. Check it out and give us some feedback folks.
That’s all from us this month. Hope to see you out and about supporting our live blues music scene.
